Statement from Mayor London Breed on Statewide Shelter-in-Place Order
San Francisco, CA — Mayor London N. Breed today issued the following statement regarding Governor Gavin Newsom’s statewide Shelter-in-Place Order:
Yesterday, Governor Newsom issued a statewide shelter-in-place order similar to the ones that San Francisco and other Bay Area counties issued on Monday. These orders help flatten the curve to protect all Californians by helping our hospitals and caregivers not become overwhelmed. San Francisco applauds this bold step by the State.
After conferring with the City Attorney and Director of Public Health, we’ve determined the Governor’s order is complementary to ours. We urge all residents to comply with the restrictions in both San Francisco’s order and the State’s order. These orders work together to ensure that everyone in San Francisco, the Bay Area and across the state minimizes risk while allowing them to take care of themselves and their loved ones, and while allowing essential businesses and services to function.
We will continue to answer the community’s questions about how the City’s order impacts their lives and will address how the state’s order works with ours. We will continue to work with our sister Bay Area counties to handle this emergency, and we look forward to coordinating with the Governor and state health authorities as we all work together to get through this crisis.
