MAYOR LONDON BREED AND FIRE COMMISSION PRESIDENT ANNOUNCE FRAMEWORK FOR SELECTING NEW FIRE CHIEF

Open process to be held in which Fire Commission will seek, interview, and present Mayor Breed with qualified candidates from which to choose

San Francisco, CA – Mayor London N. Breed and the Fire Commission today unveiled the framework for the selection of a new Fire Chief, with Commission President Ken Cleaveland officially outlining the details at today’s Fire Commission meeting.

At the next Commission meeting, to be held on Wednesday, November 14, the Commission will vote and adopt the hiring plan for the selection of a new Fire Chief. The hiring plan will include a 21-day public application period to seek out a range of diverse candidates for the role. The Department of Human Resources will vet candidates for minimum qualifications, and the Commission will commence interviews of candidates through the winter with the goal of presenting Mayor Breed with applicants from which to choose by the end of January or early February of next year. Mayor Breed will then decide who will serve as the next Fire Chief.

“I am looking forward to a thorough process to find the most qualified person to serve as our next Fire Chief,” said Mayor Breed. “While anyone may apply, I feel strongly that whoever I choose must have a comprehensive understanding of the unique aspects of San Francisco, from our dense corridors to the ever-present threat of earthquakes. Our next Fire Chief must be ready on day one.”

“The process to decide the next Fire Chief is one of the most important tasks for which our Commission is responsible,” said Fire Commission President Ken Cleaveland. “We will engage in a comprehensive vetting process so that Mayor Breed has all the information she needs to make an informed decision on this critical role.”
