Mayor Lee & Supervisor Farrell's Statement on Attack of Local Gay Man in Marina

Mayor Edwin M. Lee and District 2 Supervisor Mark Farrell today issued the following statement after 28-year-old Jeffery Lafayette was attacked outside a bar in the Marina over the weekend and condemned such acts of hate in San Francisco:

“There is no place in San Francisco for intolerance or violence toward anyone. The attack on Jeffery Lafayette is inexcusable, and is an attack on San Francisco values that embrace the acceptance and diversity of all of our communities regardless of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Violence perpetrated against a person in our LGBT community is an affront to us all. We wish Jeffery a speedy recovery after this brutal attack.

Even in San Francisco, a world leader in LGBT rights, sadly this kind of hatred and violence still exists. This incident is a stark reminder that greater awareness is needed to end bullying, discrimination and violence against our LGBT community.

San Francisco is a beacon of hope for many in the LGBT community across the country and world. We must all stand shoulder-to-shoulder to fight hate anywhere that it exists to send the strong message that love will always be stronger than hate. We will continue to advance equal rights, including equal access to quality housing, education, healthcare and employment and we must recommit ourselves to the values of equality for all to ensure everyone is safe in our City.”

The San Francisco Police Department is currently investigating the attack. Anyone with information about the identities of any these attackers should call the SFPD’s anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444 or Text A Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.
