Mayor Lee’s Statement on President Obama’s Plan to Cut Carbon Pollution

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement regarding the President’s national climate action plan:

“I applaud President Obama on his strategy to cut carbon pollution, prepare for the effects of climate change and engage our international partners to craft a global solution to a global challenge. President Obama’s plan advances carbon pollution standards, invests in sources of renewable energy, promotes energy efficiency and sets attainable goals for emission reductions. I want to thank the President for his leadership on this critical issue and doing all that he can to take action for America’s children.

Here in San Francisco, we have long known that climate change is the most significant environmental issue of the 21st Century. In 2004, San Francisco became one of the first American cities to take action against climate change. The City published one of the first local-level climate action plans in 2005, and is now pursuing emissions reductions through the promotion of renewable energy, alternative fuels, walking, biking, energy efficiency and waste reduction. As of 2010, San Francisco had achieved Citywide emission reductions of 14.5 percent from 1990 levels. San Francisco will continue to lead the way toward a future of green jobs and growing a green economy for a cleaner and healthier future.”
