Mayor Lee’s Statement on Passing of Dr. Espanola Jackson
Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on the passing of community stalwart Dr. Espanola Jackson:
“I am saddened by the passing of Dr. Espanola Jackson, a true champion of our communities. Dr. Jackson lived in Bayview-Hunters Point since the 1940s and has worked tirelessly as a grassroots community activist for the Southeast sector of our City on issues ranging from civil rights to environmental justice to economic justice.
Her dedication to the community is unmatched. Though sometimes a lone voice and often thought provoking, she made sure City government listened to our diverse communities and understood the impact to our working families. Our City has lost a great community leader, but I have no doubt that her legacy will live on in neighborhoods that she has touched.
Her family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers as we mourn her passing.”
