Mayor Lee’s Statement on 34th America’s Cup
Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on the 34th America’s Cup Finals in San Francisco where Oracle Team USA retained the 34th America’s Cup trophy against Emirates Team New Zealand after being the first team to win 9 points:
“Today, the world witnessed the greatest comeback in America’s Cup history by Cup Defender Oracle Team USA. I thank and congratulate the crew on a well-deserved victory and thank Oracle Team USA for bringing the America’s Cup to San Francisco. I also congratulate and thank the 34th America’s Cup Challengers Emirates Team New Zealand for the amazing racing on our Bay and it was a pleasure to host your many fans in our City.
Two years ago, San Francisco seized a tremendous opportunity to host the America’s Cup and not only did the event deliver by providing residents and visitors with a thrilling and unprecedented spectacle on our Bay, but the events showcased our beautiful City to the world and brought new jobs, international visitor spending and long-overdue legacy waterfront improvements.
With the America’s Cup World Series and the Louis Vuitton Cup setting the stage for this incredible match up, the events captured the imagination of the entire Bay Area and added sailing fans and enthusiasts who now better understand the science behind these high tech racing boats and the complexities of the races themselves. I remember my own exhilarating ride on one of these catamarans and how that shaped my understanding of this challenging and complex sport. We have even nurtured a new generation of international youth sailors who competed in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup this past summer.
I thank and congratulate the America’s Cup Event Authority and the America’s Cup Organizing Committee for their partnership, hard work and steadfast commitment to delivering a world-class experience for everyone who visited out waterfront and for working closely with all our City departments to deliver a sustainable, well-coordinated and successful event.
Bringing the oldest international sailing competition to San Francisco brought economic benefits, jobs, true excitement, and was the best America’s Cup yet!”
