Mayor Lee’s Statement on Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Brief Order to Lift Stay on Same Sex Marriage

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Brief Order to lift the September 2010 injunction that blocked a federal judge’s ruling declaring Proposition 8 unconstitutional:

“Today, San Francisco has begun, once again, marrying same-sex couples.

I was so proud to witness Sandy Stier and Kris Perry, the two plaintiffs in the Proposition 8 case, be married by our State Attorney General Kamala Harris in City Hall this afternoon.

Now, and from this day forward, same sex couples can share in the same joy that is available to all Americans. And while we will continue the struggle for marriage equality and civil rights for EVERY American in every state, we pause today to reflect on the historic nature of this very important milestone in our country’s history.”

San Francisco City Hall will remain open until at least 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28th and will open on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
