Mayor Mark Farrell, Cultural Affairs Director Tom DeCaigny and Grants for the Arts Director Kary Schulman on the Passing of San Francisco Artist and Activist René Yañez
“San Francisco’s cultural community has experienced a tremendous loss with the passing of curator, artist and activist René Yañez.
Known as the “Padrino of the Mission,” René dedicated decades of his life to uplifting the voices of Chicano artists and preserving the cultural heritage of the Mission District, while striving toward a more just, equitable and sustainable future for all.
René’s legacy as cultural leader in the Chicano and Latino community ranges from co-founding the Mission District’s Galería de la Raza in 1970, claiming space for cultural affirmation, accessible art, and self-discovery, to being among the first curators to introduce the contemporary concept of Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos to the United States.
San Francisco’s cultural landscape was forever changed by René, and we will miss his distinct artist voice and his incredible leadership and dedication to community. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and colleagues.”
