Mayor Lee & Seattle Mayor Murray Make Friendly Wager on 49ers-Seahawks NFC Championship Game
Losing Mayor Will Assist Winning Mayor in Raising Money for Local Food Bank or Meal Program & Send Local Favorite Treats
Mayor Edwin M. Lee and Mayor Edward B. Murray of Seattle agreed to a friendly wager on the outcome of this weekend’s 49ers-Seahawks NFC Championship playoff game, which takes place this Sunday, January 19th in Seattle, Washington.
The losing Mayor will assist the winning mayor in raising $10,000 for a food bank or meal program in the winning City. In addition, the losing Mayor will send food items to the winning City’s Mayor. Mayor Lee would send Mitchell’s Ice Cream, Poco Dolce Chocolates and Lefty O’Doul’s original 1958 Bloody Mary Mix, and Mayor Murray would send Molly Moon’s Ice Cream and Theo Chocolate.
“It was always going to come down to this – the two best teams in the NFC battling for a chance to play in the Super Bowl,” said Mayor Lee. “We wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. When the Niners raise that Lombardi Trophy in New York City next month, they will do so knowing that they’d made the trip up to Seattle and triumphed over their rivals from the North.”
“We have every confidence in our team going into Sunday’s game,” said Mayor Murray. “We know too, that the 12th man will boost our players and make it very tough for our division rival 49ers to get in a win in Seattle. We can’t say this enough, bring your earplugs.”
As the Seahawks host the 49ers this weekend, Mayor Lee and the San Francisco 49ers join Mayor Murray and the Seattle Seahawks in urging all fans to treat each other with respect. Both Mayor Murray and Mayor Lee hope and expect that fans will cheer loudly, but that supporting the home team should always be positive and peaceful. Wherever fans choose to watch the game, remember to be safe and practice good sportsmanship. In the end, the 49ers embody the value of teamwork and sportsmanship, and rivalries must remain on the field.
Mayor Lee is encouraging 49ers fans from across the Bay Area to frequent their neighborhood establishments to watch the game.
Additionally, Mayor Lee today ordered City Hall to continue to be lit in Red & Gold, and to remain lit for the remainder of the 49ers playoff run.
