Mayor Lee & Green Bay Mayor Schmitt Make Friendly Wager on 49ers-Packers Playoff Game
Losing City Will Sponsor Admission-Free Day at Winning City’s Family Museum, Send Gift Basket of Local Food Items
Today Mayor Edwin M. Lee and Mayor James J. Schmitt of Green Bay, Wisconsin agreed to a friendly wager on the outcome of this weekend’s 49ers-Packers NFC Divisional Playoff game, which takes place this Saturday, January 12 at 5:00 pm at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
The losing City will sponsor a special free kids’ visit at the winning City’s new family museum. If the 49ers win, the City of Green Bay will provide preview tours to hundreds of San Francisco school children to the new Exploratorium, set to open to the public at their new location on Pier 15 in April. If the Packers win, San Francisco will sponsor a free admission day at the Children’s Museum of Green Bay, a brand-new facility in downtown Green Bay.
In addition, the losing Mayor will send a care package of signature food and drink items to the winning Mayor. Green Bay is wagering local cheese curds, chocolates and wine. San Francisco is wagering Boudin sourdough bread, TCHO chocolates and Anchor Steam Beer.
“The Packers started their season with a loss to the Niners, and they’re going to finish their season with another loss to the Red & Gold this Saturday,” said Mayor Lee. “But I’m glad that Mayor Schmitt and I were able to make this bet and feature the exceptional family museums in our respective cities. And I am sure the people of San Francisco are thankful in advance for the admission-free day at the exciting new Exploratorium, courtesy of the City of Green Bay!”
“The Packers are on a roll right now and will continue that roll over the Golden Gate Bridge and over the 49ers,” said Mayor Schmitt. “We look forward to showcasing our Children’s Museum and to a Packers win.”
As the 49ers host the Packers this weekend, Mayor Lee and the San Francisco 49ers join with Mayor Schmitt and the Green Bay Packers to urge all fans to treat each other with respect. Both Mayor Schmitt and Mayor Lee hope and expect that fans will cheer loudly, but that supporting the home team should always be positive and peaceful. Wherever fans choose to watch the game – Candlestick Park or elsewhere – remember to be safe and practice good sportsmanship. In the end, the 49ers embody the value of teamwork and sportsmanship, and rivalries should remain on the football field.
After winning the NFC West, the San Francisco 49ers are making their second playoff appearance in as many years. Again, like last year, the 49ers finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed and had a first-round bye. The Green Bay Packers, winners of the NFC North, defeated the Minnesota Vikings last weekend to advance to this weekend’s second round. The 49ers defeated the Packers the first week of the regular season by a score of 30-22.
Mayor Lee today raised the 49ers team flag off the City Hall balcony, and ordered City Hall and Coit Tower lit in Red & Gold.
