Mayor Lee’s Statement Supporting President Obama’s Nomination Of Mayor Julián Castro As Secretary Of Housing & Urban Development

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s nomination of Mayor Julián Castro of San Antonio, Texas as the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD):

“I am in full support of the President’s nomination of Mayor Julián Castro as the next United States Secretary of HUD. As the mayor of the seventh largest city in the United States, Mayor Castro knows that building strong neighborhoods and communities is critical to the success of a city, creating jobs and fueling economic recovery. Mayor Castro is a proven leader who understands that rebuilding our nation’s housing infrastructure is an investment that will benefit generations to come.

I thank Secretary Shaun Donovan whose partnership helped us create a new strategy to re-envision public housing in San Francisco through HOPE SF, and I wish him well in leading the White House Office of Management and Budget. We are grateful for his support and the support of Leader Pelosi and Senators Feinstein and Boxer in Washington D.C. whose historic investment in San Francisco’s distressed public housing has made our re envisioning work possible. HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) allows us to renovate public housing without displacing tenants and ensures that our public housing stock will be safe, clean and in good condition for San Francisco families most in need. Building sustainable public housing for our communities is one of the best investments we can make, and together we will finish the job of rebuilding our public housing.”
