Mayor Lee Announces $5.72 Million Federal Grant For Job Training And Transitional Employment in SF

Grant from U.S. Department of Labor to Help Low-Income, Non-Custodial Parents

06/27/11—Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) grant of $5.72 million to the Office of Economic & Workforce Development (OEWD) to provide job training and transitional employment to low-income, non-custodial parents in San Francisco through the Transitions SF program. The grant is one of seven awarded nationally to communities to improve the employability, earnings and opportunities for advancement of non-custodial parents and ex-offenders.

“This funding will make a significant impact in strengthening San Francisco’s families and improving the lives of children,” said Mayor Lee. “I am grateful to the Department of Labor for helping our City build upon the successful workforce and child support programs like Transitions SF that assist parents in becoming skilled, employed and self-sufficient.”

“This grant provides needed support to individuals who face significant obstacles to employment,” said DOL Secretary Hilda L. Solis. “This assistance allows program participants to provide for themselves and their families and establishes a clear pathway to financial stability and independence.”

OEWD will partner with the Department of Child Support Services, Human Services Agency, Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo & Marin and the Sheriff’s Department in implementing this four year initiative. The Transitions SF program will provide enhanced case management, job training and placement, paid transitional employment and incentives such as adjusted child support obligations to assist non-custodial parents gain employment and meet their child support responsibilities. The initiative is part of a rigorous evaluation to assess the effectiveness of enhanced transitional employment programs.
