Mayor Lee & America’s Cup Event Authority Announce Plans to Boost Local Business Participation in Event
9/27/11— As part of the America’s Cup Event Authority’s ongoing commitment to support local businesses, today Mayor Edwin M. Lee and the Event Authority announced a local business outreach initiative to ensure San Francisco businesses benefit from the anticipated economic impact generated by the 34th America’s Cup.
The Event Authority is launching a web-based business portal that will serve as a one-stop shop for San Francisco’s small businesses to compete for America’s Cup business. The portal will act as the focal point for event organizers to announce business and contracting opportunities and for businesses to engage.
“We want to make sure that small and local businesses are ready when the more than $1 billion in economic impacts comes to the San Francisco Bay Area region,” said Mayor Lee. “Today, we are feeling the excitement of the 34th America’s Cup as we engage our local businesses, whether they are from the food and beverage and hospitality industries to the transportation industry, to our innovators and marketers.”
“The America’s Cup will create benefits throughout San Francisco’s economy, and it makes perfect sense to directly engage the local small businesses that make our City great,” said Board of Supervisors President David Chiu. “This work will help us make sure that all major events lead to the new jobs we all want to see.”
Businesses will register at the portal to showcase their products and services for consideration. The portal will also offer San Francisco-based businesses the opportunity to be highlighted as a local resource through a special designation on the site page.
This announcement comes on the heels of the launch of the Event Authority’s new jobs board, where employment opportunities with the event organizers can be found at americascup.com/opportunities.
“The 34th America’s Cup will provide a number of employment and economic development opportunities that can benefit San Francisco residents and businesses,” said Event Authority Chief Operations Officer Tom Huston. “The portal will enable us to make these connections easier, providing San Franciscans and local businesses access to opportunities generated over the next two years.”
During the month of October, the City and the Event Authority will meet with small and locally owned business organizations to present the areas where there will be business engagement opportunities, to share how they will notify businesses of these opportunities, and to discuss how businesses can market themselves to Event Authority and its America’s Cup affiliates.
“This is a tangible example of how local and small businesses can get into the pipeline of economic benefits that the America’s Cup is delivering to the San Francisco Bay Area,” said San Francisco America’s Cup Organizing Committee Chairman Mark Buell.
