Mayor Lee Announces Broadcast of Giants 2014 World Series Game Six at Civic Center Plaza

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced that Tuesday’s Game Six of 2014 World Series will be publicly broadcast live in Civic Center Plaza for families and fans to gather and cheer the San Francisco Giants onto a potential World Championship against the Kansas City Royals. San Francisco Giants lead the World Series against Kansas City Royals 3-2. Game Six will be played in Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium with first pitch at 5:07 p.m. Pacific Time. A jumbotron screen will broadcast the potential clinching game of the World Series in front of San Francisco City Hall. The City previously received permission from Major League Baseball to show the potential clinching away game.

“Our Giants have shown their magic once again as this improbable group of players refuses to quit. The Royals are no match for the arms of Bumgarner, Hudson, and Peavy or the timely hitting of Pence, Crawford, Posey, Panik, the Panda, and NLCS hero Travis Ishikawa,” said Mayor Lee. “San Francisco is entirely awash in Giants Orange to cheer on our hometown team. The game that could clinch may be in Kansas City, but we’re creating an October Together opportunity in front of City Hall for families to gather and cheer on the Giants to another World Series victory.”

The Mayor’s Office, in collaboration with the Recreation and Park Department, will broadcast the potential clinching away game in Civic Center Plaza. In keeping with the event focus on families, alcohol will not be sold or permitted on Civic Center Plaza during the broadcast. Those attending the broadcast are encouraged to come early to secure a spot and take public transportation via MUNI or BART to Civic Center or Van Ness stations.

This is an alcohol-free event. San Francisco Police and Recreation and Park Departments will be on hand to monitor and enforce a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and other controlled substances in Civic Center Plaza.

As the Giants continue their run in the best-of-seven playoff for the Commissioner’s Trophy, Mayor Lee and the San Francisco Giants joined Mayor James and the Kansas City Royals to urge all fans to treat each other with respect. Wherever fans choose to watch the game – at Civic Center or at their favorite local neighborhood bar or restaurant – be safe and practice good sportsmanship. In the end, the World Series celebrates the game of baseball, and rivalries should remain on the field.

Mayor Lee officially proclaimed it “San Francisco Giants Pride Week,” beginning Tuesday, October 21st and continuing through the end of the World Series, to urge San Francisco Giants fans around the City and beyond to celebrate their hometown team after they clinched the National League Championship title and advanced to the World Series. Mayor Lee is urging Giants fans and local businesses to show their pride for the National League Champion team by wearing Orange or displaying signs, flags or any form of support for the hometown team. In a show of civic pride, the San Francisco Giants flag will continue to fly over City Hall. City Hall, Coit Tower and San Francisco International Airport along with a number of civic and landmark buildings in San Francisco will remain lit in Orange for the duration of the World Series.
