Mayor Lee’s Update on Mission Fire Aid & Recovery

Mayor Ed Lee’s update on the efforts to provide support and aid for the residents and businesses impacted by the five-alarm fire on the 3300 block of Mission Street on June 18th:

“On behalf of City and County of San Francisco, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to all the victims of Saturday’s five-alarm fire in the Mission.

Fifty-eight residents were left without homes. The City and the Red Cross are working closely with displaced residents, and I thank the nearby Salvation Army for providing food, shelter and support during this catastrophic time in their lives. The City is providing a variety of services including mental health support through the Department of Public Health.

Our impacted residents need housing, and the Human Services Agency is exploring long-term housing options. I am strongly encouraging property owners and landlords to use the Good Samaritan Temporary Occupancy Residential Rent Ordinance to help house those displaced so that they can more easily find temporary housing.

The outpouring of support from the community has been incredible, and once again shows what an amazing City we live in. I encourage those that want to help should provide a donation to either the Red Cross Bay Area or to the Salvation Army.

A dedicated team from our City’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development will work closely with impacted and nearby small businesses as they work to recover and re-open after this terrible fire. From filling out Disaster Declaration Forms to providing affected employees on unemployment insurance, health care, and job transition services, the City will assist impacted businesses and affected employees in need disaster recovery resources and services.

The Department of Emergency Management is submitting a Small Business Administration Declaration Assistance Request to the State of California, which if approved, provides low interest loans to qualified businesses that were affected by the Mission Fire. We will do all we can to help our businesses get back on their feet.

I would like to thank the more than 150 heroic firefighters, police and other emergency personnel who responded to the scene. Because of the swift action of our Fire Department to stop the spread of the fire, severe damage to other homes, businesses and structures in the neighborhood was avoided.”
