Mayor Lee Announces San Francisco to Submit Bid to Host Super Bowl ā€œLā€

Hosting U.S. Biggest Sporting Event Would Bring Enormous Economic Boost, Legacy for Youth to Region; Philanthropist Daniel Lurie Tapped to Lead Bid Committee of Bay Area Leaders

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced that San Francisco, in partnership with the San Francisco 49ers and a San Francisco Bay Area regional bid committee, will submit a formal bid to the National Football League (NFL) to host Super Bowl L in 2016. The NFL officially invited San Francisco and Miami, Florida, home to the Dolphins, to submit a bid today to compete in hosting the 50th Super Bowl.

At the request of Mayor Lee, Daniel Lurie, Founder and CEO of the Tipping Point Community, will lead the regional bid committee and assemble the Cityā€™s bid. The game, which would be held at the 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara, would bring hundreds of millions in revenue for the entire host region.

ā€œThereā€™s no better place to play host to the Super Bowl and celebrate one of our greatest sports than San Francisco and the Bay Area,ā€ said Mayor Lee. ā€œSan Francisco has proven time and again that we know how to host the world for major events and shine on the international stage. A Super Bowl in the Bay Area will bring an enormous economic boost to our entire region and leave a lasting legacy for Bay Area youth. I look forward to working with Daniel Lurie, the 49ers, Santa Clara Mayor Matthews and San Jose Mayor Reed to host the best Super Bowl ever.ā€

ā€œAs a lifelong San Franciscan, I am honored that Mayor Lee has asked me to lead this effort,ā€ said Lurie. ā€œWe are committed to making this Super Bowl the most philanthropic game ever.ā€
