Mayor Lee’s Statement on Union Square Bus Crash

Mayor Edwin M. Lee issued the following statement calling on the California Attorney General, California Public Utilities Commission and the California Highway Patrol to launch a full and complete investigation of the City Sightseeing tour bus crash that occurred on November 13, 2015 in San Francisco:

“I am extremely concerned about the allegations that state safety regulations have not been followed by City Sightseeing and I urge the California Attorney General, California Public Utilities Commission and the California Highway Patrol to launch a full and complete investigation of this terrible incident that resulted in serious injuries to several residents and visitors to our City.

While the facts of this crash are still emerging, it is absolutely clear that we need a thorough investigation to ensure that a collision like this does not happen again and that those responsible are held accountable.

My thoughts and prayers remain with the victims of this preventable collision as they struggle to recover from their injuries.”

Early reports from the California Public Utilities Commission indicate that the tour bus was not registered with the California Public Utilities Commission, as required, and therefore did not undergo a safety inspection by the California Highway Patrol. Mayor Lee has offered the full assistance of the San Francisco Police Department, the initial first responder to this collision and whose investigation is ongoing.

In 2014, the City and County of San Francisco adopted Vision Zero as a policy, committing to build safer streets, educate the public on traffic safety, enforce traffic laws, and adopt policy changes that save lives.
