Mayor Lee’s Statement on $41 Million State Cap & Trade Transportation Funding for Muni Light Rail Vehicles

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement regarding $41.1 million grant award from the California State Transportation Agency as part of the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program funded by the cap-and-trade auction proceeds to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to expand the Muni light rail vehicle fleet:

“This significant investment in San Francisco’s transportation network is critical to meet our goal of building and sustaining a world class 21st Century transportation system for a growing City and a growing ridership.

I am grateful for the leadership of Governor Jerry Brown, California State Transportation Agency Secretary Brian Kelly and other State legislative leaders for investing in improvements that will have a direct impact on riders, who will see new light rail vehicles and a more reliable, safe and affordable experience on Muni.

This allows us to move forward with a major expansion of Muni’s fleet, with the purchase of additional light rail vehicles, replacing the entire fleet with new, state of the art Siemens vehicles. This investment from the cap-and-trade program will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help take vehicles off congested streets, while keeping San Francisco’s transportation system one of the most diverse and greenest transit fleets in the nation.”
