Mayor Lee’s Statement on Death of Dr. Maya Angelou

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on the passing of renowned poet, author and civil rights leader Dr. Maya Angelou:

“San Francisco joins the world in mourning Dr. Maya Angelou who fought for civil rights and inspired us with her art. Her poetry and prose inspired us to recognize the potential within each of us. Her words were felt deeply, and her legacy has had a profound impact in our City and on our residents.

Her ties to our City were also deep, having lived in San Francisco where she wrote about her experiences. She grew up in the Fillmore District, graduated from Mission High School, studied dance and drama, and became the first African-American female street car conductor in San Francisco.

San Francisco mourns as we have lost someone who forever changed our hearts, minds and the world.”
