Mayor Lee’s Statement on Super Bowl 50

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement after the NFL announced that Super Bowl 50 will be February 7, 2016:

“The nation’s biggest sporting event is coming to the San Francisco Bay Area on February 7, 2016 and we’ll be ready.  Game day and all of the events that lead up to it will bring an enormous economic boost to the entire Bay Area Region and leave a lasting legacy.

We are committed to hosting the best, most innovative and most philanthropic Super Bowl in the history of the game. I thank the San Francisco 49ers, Santa Clara Mayor Matthews and San Jose Mayor Reed for their continued partnership in bringing a successful Super Bowl to the Bay Area.”

The bid committee has announced that it raised $30 million in pledges from partners including Apple, Boston Consulting Group, Dignity Health, Gap, Google, Intel, Yahoo!, Seagate, and ValueAct Capital. The committee will continue development efforts to exceed fundraising goals for Super Bowl 50 where 25 percent of funds raised will be dedicated to philanthropic legacy projects to help children and families living in poverty in the Bay Area.
