Mayor Lee’s Statement on Celebrating Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Mayor Edwin M. Lee today issued the following statement on celebrating life of civil rights leader Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.:

“Today on this day we celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, and we reflect on how far we have come. Of course, it was Dr. King who said it best: ‘We may have come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.’ San Francisco is a place where everyone belongs, no matter your race, income, sexual orientation or immigration status.

Dr. King’s dream is alive and well in our City. I’m proud that our diverse communities are working together – for each other, for one another – and we will continue to work on issues of equity and equality, creating good paying jobs, building affordable housing, and improving health care and making sure our working families succeed.

I recognize that our work is far from done. I am invigorated to help more of our residents share in the prosperity of our City, lift up those that call San Francisco home, and provide compassion and care for our most in need. Together we will continue to build the trust between the community and our police officers to keep our City safe.

Our responsibility is to leave San Francisco a more affordable, more resilient City for our future generations and future newcomers. Let our common goal be to make San Francisco strong enough to weather any storm on the horizon, and let us do it together.”
